As a local resident of Cleveland, I have had a front row seat to watch the unfolding drama and sadness that encompasses yet another school shooting. While people scramble for facts and interviews, the grief and anguish for many families is just beginning. The shooting at SuccessTech Academy in downtown Cleveland happened midday on Wednesday.

The school is located on Lakeside Avenue which is on the northeast side of Cleveland. At the time of the shooting, I was a half-mile south of the school waiting at an RTA bus stop (Cleveland's public transportation method). The streets of Cleveland were not any different during this day, yet the clouds above my head were a dull gray color. The prospect of rain was hanging over everyone, so conversations on the street were brief, and everyone's head was turned towards the ground as if they were trying to ignore the dismal weather in the sky. However, this weather perfectly suited the horrific events that took place in the school just a five minute walk from where I was standing.

The sound of sirens and horns eventually blends into the monotonous noise of a city, yet on this day I distinctly remember hearing police sirens and the honk of ambulances trying to navigate their way through busy city traffic. The sound did not carry special significance on this day, but it did seem to be louder than the normal distress signals of emergency vehicles. Because I was standing at a bus stop directly by the street, (Chester Ave and E. 13th Street if you prefer maps), I had a clear view of traffic and the sidewalk for a good distance. Although police and ambulances made their presence known, the rest of the everyday traffic was not immediately disturbed by the events at the school. Foot traffic remained as consistent as ever, and cars drove along the same routes as any other day.

I believe the reason nobody's placing blame on the boy directly is because he killed himself. It's just instinctive. So is the, "He's better off dead" mentality. It proves that humanity has failed to take that last, evolutionary leap.

I've noticed it's a trend to place the blame on everyone else instead of the person at fault. No matter what it is, a murder, a school shooting, a stolen vehicle... There's always someone else to blame. Let's blame music/tv/internet for all our problems instead of placing the blame where it belongs. Much easier to place blame elsewhere than take it yourself.

I parked in the parking lot next to that school for years before I retired. It is so sad and I agree with what you said---everyone is blaming the school district, the parents and everyone else but no one is blaming the shooter. This young man had major problems and I just wonder why he wasn't getting the help he needed. As bad as this may sound, in a way it's probably better that he took his own life because he had mental problems and his future didn't look very promising.

I agree with William Pinn. Things like this did not happen when i went to school. I'm planning to write an article of a disturbance that happened in one of our L.A. schools.

This kind of thing did not happen when I was in school. Has the world gone mad?

I lived in Oklahoma just miles down the road from a school shooting. It scared my 7 year old daughter so badly that we took her out of school and homeschooled her. It's sad when kids can't even feel safe at school. I never would have been afraid of getting shot at school when I was growing up. Good article.

Man, I hated to hear about this yesterday. In cases like this, it's hard to really please everybody. Someone is always going to be the one to blame, but how on earth can we prevent these things from happening?
