Since we were in the Madison area anyway, I thought it would be a good time to make a trip over to near-by Middleton to check out the Bavarian Café. While the food was good, I honestly feel I just didn't get value for my money. What originally attracted me to the Bavarian Café (7457 Elmwood Avenue) were the reviews I had read stating it was a great place for both breakfast and lunch. As a rule, I normally take newspaper reviews with a grain of salt since they normally are about advertisers (which means they rarely say anything bad). But, they made a convincing argument.
When we got there, I will admit I was impressed with the atmosphere. The stone building looked beautiful from the outside and the red and green in the front awning really made it stand out. We were also tempted dine out at one of the tables on the restaurant's front walk.
The atmosphere inside was just as nice. The lighting was dimmed just right and the tables were spaced pretty well apart so we didn't feel we were sitting in on someone else's meal.
Since it was lunch time, my wife and I each decided to order the chicken stir fry. And, like the reviews promised, the food did a great job living up to the expectations the restaurant's atmosphere gave us. I even can say the service was really good considering we ended up dining there during a busy lunch hour.
My only real complaint about the food is quantity. The price for the chicken stir fry wasn't bad; $9.85. However, I've gotten a bit spoiled when I dine out and I'm used paying that much for something on the menu and (because I usually won't eat too much in one sitting) have enough food leftover to make another meal. That wasn't the case at the Bavarian Café. The second our food was brought to us, I could tell I would have nothing left over. And, after eating it, I realized I was actually still a bit hungry (a problem that was solved later in the afternoon by a trip to McDonalds).
