If the past six American idol winners where to compete who would win? I guess the main question you would ask when dealing with past Idol winners is "What have they accomplished lately?" Here are the winners from the last six years, and how I would rank them.

American Idol Winner Ranked #6

Ruben Studdard from Season 2: Ruben's post Idol career started out with a bang when his signature song "Flying Without Wings" debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. His album Soulful debuted at number one with advance orders exceeding 1 million before being released. Songs Sorry 2004 and "Superstar" also did very well. Ruben also won the NAACP Outstanding New Artist award that year. Yes 2004 was Rueben's year, and his only year so far. To his credit are also a few acting appearances in sitcoms and a song cameo in a Scooby Doo movie. The jury is out on his recent Album release, The Return. Please do not misunderstand my love for the velvety voiced crooner by placing him at the bottom of the proverbial pile. He is probably my personal favorite, but I worry about his longevity and crossover appeal.

American Idol Winner Ranked #5

Fantasia Barrino from Season 3: Fantasia's post idol career also started strong. Her first album, Free Yourself, was a commercial success, earning her four Grammy nominations and selling over 2.1 million copies. Unfortunately, her steam dissipated under the walls of her Adult Urban Contemporary genre, for which she was named number-one artist for 2005. She released a second Album, Fantasia in December of 2006 and in April 2007 began her starring role as Celie in the Broadway Musical, The Color Purple. While she is not loved by all, she does have a strong fan base and is versatile enough to have a long lasting career.

American Idol Winner Ranked #4

Takeaways
  • Jordin Sparks has lots of potential and universal appeal.
  • Ruben Studdard sings wonderfully, but his fan base is limited.
  • Kelly Clarkson brushed off the movie failure and succeeded anyway.

I was for Bo to win, as well, but Carrie has done so much better. This may be due to Bo's health problems and his "branding" as a pop singer for the "Real Thing" album. We'll see how he does with his second album, more his preferred style of Southern rock. I think Melissa has a good point, too, considering the success of Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson. It makes me sad to see other people I really liked, like Tamyra Gray, disappear completely from sight, though.

Sometimes it is not the winner that excels in this game.
