Ask the average American for tips on finding a cheap vacation, and they'll likely give you instructions for finding discounted airfare to Hawaii or cheap vacation packages to Disneyland. They'll tell you about their favorite travel websites or travel auctions. They'll give you dozens of interesting tips, however they very rarely even hint at the most important tip of all: choose a cheap destination.

There's a lot more out there than just Hawaii, Disneyland, and Europe. Vacations in the developed world (North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, etc.) are expensive. A $100/night room in Las Vegas may sound like a great deal, but not if you consider the fact that $100 will afford you 4 nights at a Fijian resort.

The world is literally packed with unique, exciting, and cheap vacations, if you're simply willing to get out of the comfort of your own backyard. As the transportation industry develops and airfares continue to drop, budget travel destinations like Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia are now closer than ever. Incredible travel destinations that can be comfortably visited on just $20/day. A pretty good deal when you consider the fact that a taxi ride alone can cost well over $20 in the US.

Are you looking for an inexpensive beach holiday? Instead of booking a trip to Hawaii or Key West where you'll easily spend $150-$200 on lodging a lone, look into a trip to Central America or Southeast Asia. Beaches in countries like Thailand or Belize are world class, and it's easy to find a nice beachfront resort for just $25-$30 a night.

What about the mountains? Do you want to go hiking and relaxing at a cozy mountain lodge? You could organize a trip to Aspen, but that will cost you well over $100 a day. So why not try something different, head down to Ecuador or Peru and have a truly unique experience staying in a 17th century colonial hacienda. Spend your days touring the Andes mountains and local villages on horseback, and your nights relaxing in the cool Andean air. All for just $30-$40 per night.
