Over the years I have dressed up as a witch, a cat, a Street Walker, an old man, the god Zeus, a chicken- yes, a chicken- among other things for Halloween. I think buying costumes is rather hum-drum. Instead, I love to use my creativity to make my own costumes from scratch. Probably my best Halloween costume ever, though, was the one that won "First Prize" at a Halloween party I attended a few years ago. Read this interesting article and find out what I dressed up as!

What to Dress Up As?
I had a Halloween party coming up, so I was looking for a creative costume that wouldn't cost a lot of cash. So, I looked around the house to see what kind of materials I could come up with. I also talked to friends and family to see what they would be willing to contribute. Finally, an idea hit me: my best Halloween costume ever would be to dress up as a "country singer."

Time to Gather the Materials
I scrounged up a pair of authentic Long John's (complete with the flap in the back), and an old, floppy men's hat, courtesy of my grandfather; an old pair of Clod Hoppers (boots), borrowed from my brother; a pair of wildly-colored, striped knee-high socks; a guitar, an old wig, a bandanna, and a pillow.

How to Create the Costume
On the night of the Halloween party, about an hour before we were scheduled to leave, my friend Pat helped me create my costume. I put on a pair of white shorts with an elastic waist band and a white tee shirt. (If you decide to use this costume yourself, you don't want your under clothes to show through. That's why you need the light-colored clothing.) The Long John's were white in color. In retrospect, I probably should have dyed them red or purple to make them even more outrageous.

I then put the Long John's on over my clothing. I put the pair of bright socks on and pulled them up so they covered my leg about halfway up. I adjusted each sock so they were still slouchy. Over the socks went the boots. They were kind of dirty and scuffed, but that just added to the effect of my best Halloween costume ever.
