Our family doesn't drink much juice, much preferring fresh fruits instead. Orange juice is the exception however, because of our limited selection of fresh oranges during the winter. Orange juice provides us with 160% of our recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C which keeps us healthy during cold and flu season.

Orange juice hasn't been immune to the rising costs of groceries. These days, a 12 ounce container of Minute Maid frozen concentrate is $2.99. This is an incredible jump from just a few years ago when we could routinely find it on sale for about half this price. With Minute Maid no longer fitting into our grocery budget, it was time to explore other options.

Albertsons grocery stores offer a concentrated orange juice under their Albertsons house brand. This juice also comes in a 12 ounce container, but costs $1.89 with a preferred card.

comparison by price

Albertsons orange juice is 31¢ per serving compared to Minute Maid at 49¢ serving, representing an 18¢ per serving difference. That's quite a savings!

comparison by nutrition

As far as the nutritional difference, the Minute Maid orange juice provide 460 mg of potassium, 27 carb grams, 160% of daily Vitamin C and 2% of calcium. How does the Albertsons orange juice compare? Albertsons actually has more potassium at 480 mg, and equal amount of carb grams, vitamin C and calcium. It also provide something that Minute Maid doesn't have; 10% of the recommended daily value of both Thiamin and Folate. From a nutrition standpoint, the Albertsons brand of orange juice has a bit on a edge.

comparison by taste

Of course, what really matters to our families when it comes to comparison, is how it tastes. Having grown up with an orange orchard out our back door, the hallmark of a ripe orange is that incredible sweetness of tree ripened fruit. The Minute Maid juice has that sweet flavor I remember from my childhood, and tastes like a juicy orange fresh from the tree. Minute Maid takes pride in harvesting only the best fruit from Florida, Brazil, and Costa Rica orange groves.
