October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Maine
According to a recently published Official Web Site of the State of Maine press release, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci and First Lady Karen Baldacci hosted the Maine Coalition to
End Domestic Violence this past Thursday afternoon for a inviting and formal reception at the Blaine House. The Governor, with the help of the First Lady, declared that October would be Domestic Violence Awareness Month throughout Maine.
Governor Baldacci said, "It is my hope that in proclaiming Domestic Violence Awareness Month, people will become more aware of this issue and the havoc it creates in families. A coordinated community response is necessary to reach into the heart of a problem that I know everyone here is committed to ending."
During the reception on Thursday at the Blaine House, the Maine Projects and Coalition staff honored many community members who helped promote the end of domestic violence and spouse abuse in the state of Maine.
Recently, a state legislation was passed by the 123rd Legislature in Maine earlier this year in 2007. The Governor acknowledged this legislation during the reception today stating that it helped many domestic violence victims since it made forms of domestic violence a Class D crime.
The Governor added, "For repeat offenders of domestic violence, the consequences become more serious. That is landmark Legislation. You should be proud of the work that you did to get the Legislation passed, working with the bill's sponsor Senate President Beth Edmonds."
Maine First Lady Karen Baldacci also acknowledged the efforts of the group, stating that they were working hard to create domestic violence awareness in Maine.
More information about Domestic Violence Awareness and events throughout the month in Maine will be posted at the official state government web site at Maine.gov. Many other states are also celebrating this month of awareness. Visit your local state government web site to see if your own state has anything planned for this month.
