Several years ago, I was a single mom with two young children, and not a lot of money to go around. My daughter was 10 years old and my son was three, and they both wanted to dress up for Halloween. I didn't have spare money for Halloween costumes. I decided I would find a way to make them homemade Halloween costumes from things I already had around the house, but wanted something other than a white sheet to make a ghost.

That year, I managed to make two of the best homemade Halloween costumes for both of my children, and I only spent $2.00 for supplies. In fact, I ended up making a profit. Let me describe the Halloween costumes first, and then I'll explain how I earned money from making these two homemade Halloween costumes!

Best Homemade Halloween Costume: Kitty Cat

My daughter's homemade Halloween costume was very simple, but it was the most expensive of both costumes I made for my children that year. I had to go to the dollar store and buy a pair of black tights for her, total cost: $1.50. We didn't care that dollar store tights are cheaply made, since she was only going to wear them for one night anyway.

Then I hit Goodwill and found a black fuzzy belt for all of .50 cents. Using her leotard that she wore for gymnastic that school year (it was black, but a black swim suit or body suit would work too), along with the black tights, I dressed her in black from head to toe. Then with a safety pin, I attached the fuzzy belt from Goodwill to her bottom, and presto - she was a kitty cat.

Using mama's mascara, eyeliner and lipstick, we gave her a nice reddish pink nose and painted on black whiskers, and she was the cutest little human kitty cat I'd ever seen, with her hair up in pigtails (or were they kitty cat tails?).

Best Homemade Halloween Costume: Hobo

I was a bit more creative with my son. I had no idea what to do with him for a Halloween costume, but knew that at three years old, I wasn't really wanting blood and gore or a scary Halloween costume.

We must have gone through his entire closet trying to figure out what to do for his Halloween costume before inspiration struck me.

I remember the year my mom made me a princess costume out of pieces of a super shiny tacky goodwill dress - I felt so pretty that I was furious I had to put my coat on b/c it was cold! I will never forget that she did that for me. Good job with your kids costumes!

My girls are 17(going on23) and 13(going on 23). When the were little,Halloween was my FAVORITE holiday, because it gave me a chance to be very creative, a few of my home made costumes even won awards. Now that they are teens they dont want to have anything to do with my creativity! So much so that they wont event hear any of my suggestions of how to accessorize the $50 costumes that they bought......How I miss those days when my girls thought i was cool.

Great ideas! I did something similar once with my oldest when she was little. I did a bunny costume. All I had to buy was the rabbit ears. I made a pom out of white yarn for her tail. She wore her white body suit, stockings, and ballet slippers from classes she had taken the year before. Mommy's pink lipstick on the nose and eyeliner for whiskers. That was definitely the cutest costume she ever wore.

I'm surprised hobo hasn't died of political incorrectness but it was a favorite when I was a kid. I love the creative, homemade Halloween fun you made instead of buying commercial stuff. That's how Halloween always used to be and it was so much more fun.

How cute! That's great that they won prizes in the contest. I bet they loved that. I absolutely love homemade costumes. They're cheap, easy, and are often the best looking of the bunch. We're doing homemade versions of these for the kids this year: pirate, gypsy, and two princesses. The kids are actually helping make them for a fun homeschool assignment in art/home ec. Who knows, me and hubby may even make a costume as well. Sometimes we dress up and sometimes we don't.

Ahhh I remember doing the Hobo back when I was a kid (I'm 50 now) and had feared homemade fun like that had been long forgotten for silly assed store-bought stuff. I am very glad to see the tradition continues, and is even rewarded! Go You!

Great job with these costumes, and sharing the information. We've done the hobo, and we did a cow one year, homemade, because we couldn't afford anything else. Good article.
