What is your best Halloween costume ever? Everybody probably has their own favorite when a convergence of the universe came together just perfectly to result in the ideal costume for Halloween. For me, the choice is easy. The fact that it also represents the best that can happen when the unique talents of individuals come together to meet a common goal just adds icing to the Halloween cupcake.

The year was 1980...or possibly 1981. The time, well, Halloween-ish. I and three of my friends were sitting around inside the house that one of the others was renting. Their names: Mark Kochinski, his brother Matt, and our friend and sometimes nemesis Bill Brykczynski. Yes, I liked hanging out with Polacks and Russians, okay? Rosie O'Grady's was and is a popular nightclub in Pensacola, Fl., and every year they hold a costume contest. I can't remember how much the winner got that year, but $100 is flitting about in my memory. We were sitting around that night brainstorming ideas about how to win that contest. We were all quite confident in our intellectual and creative superiority; enough to know for sure that between the four us we should quite easily be capable of coming up with a winner. I can't remember what the other suggestions were, but I do remember that my part in this process was as the idea man. I half-jokingly suggested that we go as Pink Floyd's The Wall after the ridiculously successful album of the same name still enjoying airplay at that time. I believe at first my suggestion was misunderstood somehow because I can clearly remember saying something along the lines of "No, I mean let's actually go as the wall."

An image from the album. Many of these illustrations wound up on our costume. Photographic evidence does exist of our costume, but I have so far not yet been able to retrieve it.

And, for the record, Dale Boyd is a WAAAAYYYY better artist than me. But I'm flattered nonetheless.

Is there an echo in here?

Wow, somehow I missed this article. Yeah, that was a pretty good high point. We actually built 3 dimensional puppets bursting out of the wall. It was pretty cool. Pity I never got a picture of it... And Bill is still my nemesis. And someday I will defeat him. Oh yes.

Great article, G-mo. I'll spot you the couple of minor inaccuracies for the details I had forgotten. Sometimes nemisis? I think not.
