Some website owners think of blogs as something that teenagers write in order to keep their friends updated on what's going on in their life. This is true, partially. However, blogs can also be used to up page views, add quality content to your website, up your keyword count, and keep your website current. Consider these benefits of having a blog on your website:

Providing Quality Content
If your business is in offering a service, then you may not have a lot of room for content within your web pages. However, if you add a blog to your site, then you have an unlimited space to add content that is interesting to your potential customers. Your blog could consider news in your industry, it could offer information about your product that people might search for before making a purchase, or it could be a mixture of both. Regardless of what your blog is about, it can be a valuable place to add content that just doesn't fit within your general pages.

Encourages Linking
The second most effective way to increase your search engine ranking is to get other websites to link to yours. There are two ways to go about this: you could spend hours upon hours soliciting link exchanges with other web businesses, or you could provide content that other websites see as valuable to their visitors. By providing engaging and useful content, you are more likely to be viewed as a source of information by other web businesses, therefore encouraging these businesses to link to your site as a reference for their visitors. A blog can be the perfect place to do this, as more and more people are now linking to informational blogs from their own websites and blogs.

Higher Keyword Count
You can only fit so many keywords within your main web pages unless you're stuffing and trying to fool the spiders. Even if you're plugging keywords into your content at every opportunity, you may not have enough to raise your search engine rankings. However, if you post a blog every day that uses your keyword only once, then you're adding seven instances of your keyword to your site every week. This can up your keyword count significantly over a period of time.
