Has your son or daughter all of sudden come up to you and asked you for a pet? Not a pet that your use to like a dog or a cat, but have asked to get a pet snake. Well if this is the case and you really want to make your child happy, read this article and pay attention. Buying a snake for a child is not the same as going to the pet store and picking out a puppy or kitten. There are specific snakes for specific age groups. I myself love snakes, I have two beautiful pythons, one that is 13 feet and the other that is 10 feet. These snakes that I have are not children snakes. The snakes that you want to look for are the corn snakes and royal pythons. Below I will explain the two and what you need to get started.
The Corn Snake is one of the species of a rat snake. Corn snakes go after their prey by slowly moving towards them then wrapping their body around it and eventually suffocating them. This is called constricting and is a basic instinct for this snake which will do this in captivity as well as in the wild. Called the corn snake because of it's pattern on the belly, this snake is very docile and makes an excellent first pet for any child who is capable and knows how to take care of them. The corn snake can grow between 4 and 6 feet in length and can live between 15 and 20 years.
Royal Pythons are excellent snakes to start out with, however you must be sure to buy a Royal Python that has been bred in captivity and not one that has been found in the wild and then tamed. As with any snake, the attitude depends on how they have been raised. All snakes can be aggressive if treated in such a manor. The reason I am telling you to try a Royal Python as a beginner snake is because they only get between 3-4 feet in length, they are very docile and extremely handleable snakes, they are very good feeders, are non problematic, and can be found in basically any reptile store or pet stores that carry snakes.

Becky G. Um, I think you are wrong about that. There are different kind of breed that you can easily tame, and others that are quite difficult.
Giving attention to the snakes are very important because if there is a great lack of attention, the snakes will fall back into their nature instincts by protecting themselves from people. It's important to maintain it.
With dogs, there are several breeds that are not wise to own. For example, there's some breeds like Pit Bulls that are not good to be around with children. Meanwhile, other breeds are excellent with children.
It applies to different breed of birds as well. Same goes for lizards. It applies to many different animals.
I own snakes and I haven't encountered problems with them. I do my homework with which type of breed is excellent to own, their good reputation. Experienced reptile owners like the challenge, they would buy something that's not quite ideal for children. That is their choice. They know the rules

Beautiful burms . We have a BCI or should i say a red tail boa . That will be two in March . Also had a ball python that was 8 months old she died Sunday from a resportory infrection the meds did not help her . But I have three boys from the age 9 to 4 . My 9 yr old was very upset about the death . But we are going tommorrow to get him his own snake beens he knows the dos and dont very very well . He wants a corn snake . He has one in mind when we went and looked yesteday . They are one of the best starter snakes . I would defiantly halft to agree .

im a 9 year old and i might get a red tail boa in january im 8 but i think a surinam red tail boa is best for a 9 year old i already have a calofornia king and a ball python but the ball python died from infection from a mice bite I think a ball python is a crapy snake to have and they are picky

Good article, and nice burm! Colubrids like corn snakes are good for children because they are active and don't mind being handled.
Ball pythons/royal pythons are good snakes, too, but they are shy and don't move as much. They are also unreliable feeders and most go off feed for at least a month or two each year. This is fine for the snake, but can be stressful to a new snake owner.
No snakes at my house...
