1. No Matter How You Rake Your Leaves, Always Stretch First
Think about it. You wouldn't go jogging without doing some muscle stretches first, nor do you start your exercising class without warming up as well. Raking leaves is a vigorous job that requires the same consideration. So before you head outside with rake in hand, take 10 to 15 minutes to stretch your muscles first. Concentrate on your arms, leg and back- the muscles you'll use to rake with.
2. Take Breaks When You Rake
Another way to rake leaves without hurting your back is to take breaks throughout the job. The more out-of-shape your body is, the more rest stops you'll need. When you begin to feel a twinge in your back, legs or arms, stop what you're doing and give your body a short rest. Then, perform a few stretches before you begin again.
3. Use An Ergonomic Rake
You probably have an old-fashioned tine rake in your garage or garden shed. I do. There are newer, improved rakes on the market that can help you rake leaves without hurting your back. They're called "Ergonomic Rakes", and they're designed to make the task easier. Take for example the Garden Pivot Leaf Rake. This tool allows you to gather up leaves without stooping and bending over because the head rotates.
Or, for the same (approximately) thirty-five bucks, you can choose a Garden Brand BackSaver Pick-Up Rake instead. It's made similar to a conventional rake, but it has a cable and pulley system that opens/closes the tines. This allows you to pick up piles of leaves without bending over. Check your local hardware or home improvement store for availability of these products.
