Studies Reveal that Generic Wellbutrin (bupropion) Does Not Act the Same Way as the Original Wellbutrin

Is Your Anti-Depressant Working?

A report of studies done by the ConsumerLab show that the generic drug for depression known as bupropion worked differently than the non-generic drug called Wellbutrin XL. XL is a timed release formula of this anti-depressant. Tests showed as well

that taking two generic bupripion SR, which would be taken twice a day, released the drug differently than the XL time released drug which is taken once a day. It was found that time-released generic drugs sometimes use tablet technologies that differ from the original product. This might explain the differences.

Readers of The People's Pharmacy, a syndicated newspaper column, began reporting problems back in February. Accounts were posted at www.peoplespharmacy.com. The anecdotal accounts stated that people had been successfully taking Wellbutrin XL 300 but when the switched to the generic formula they became irritable, nausea, had headaches and insomnia. Accounts noted that after switching back to the non-generic brand these symptoms went away.

The co-authors of The People's Pharmacy, Joe and Teresa Graedon, reported the above account to the FDA who told the Graedons it would be looked into. As of now the FDA has not reported the results if any testing is in fact even going on. The Graedons decided to go to ConsumerLab.com for help in testing the generic product and the original product.

The testing was funded by ConsumerLab.com without drug company involvement. The full report is available at ConsumerLab.com to subscribers.

The report includes test results, information about other generic versions of bupropion on the market, and a list of other popular extended-release generic drugs such as Global (generic bupropion); Teva (generic bupropion) and Watson (generic bupropion).

Reports of generic drug problems by consumers are posted at www.peoplespharmacy.com.

ConsumerLab.com is a New York based company that does independent evaluations of health products. Dr. Ted Cooperman, President of ConsumerLab.com, was shocked when he saw the results of the tests.

I started on the name brand Wellbutrin XL for 2 1/2 months and was fine and switched to the TeVA generic budeprion XL and all hell broke loose, I felt sped up in a bad way, nauseaus, angry, and just plain bad. I took a day off and switched back to the name brand and no problems. NAME BRAND AT LEAST ON THIS ONE!

Why would you even post a response like that?

i just switched from wellbutrin XL to the generic and it is not working. I am having all kinds of anxiety. I don't know how i will afford it but I will have to switch back if something doesn't change.

I, too, have felt my Teva has stopped working. Would somebody describe why the difference between Teva and Wellbutrin brand? I was on Teva for a long time until it stopped. Is it the brand or am I becoming drug tolerant? Life is hard.

Wow- all I can say is... clearly advertising is working on all of you. More power to the drug companies!

As a former pharmaceutical rep, I never bought into the idea that a class of drugs like antidepressants could not be easily switched to generics. I was always taught biovariability between generics vs. brand was less than 10%. Well, I learned my lesson. My Wellbutrin SR by TEVA pooped out. I felt hopeless as I figured Wellbutrin just no longer worked for me and I knew typical SSRI's (Prozac, et al) did not ever work for me. I felt so bad, so tired and almost suicidal. A friend confided to me that she too, took Wellbutrin and told me about this controversy. Thank god for the People's Pharmacy taking the initiative to have these products tested by Consumer Labs. I am now on DAW (Dispense as Written) Wellbutrin XL and life is good. I will say that the pharmacies always try to give me generic. I don't leave the pharmacy until I check I have the branded product. I take generic clonazepam but insist that they fill it with any generic house but not EVER TEVA. Teva should be sued. S

Heather - we have to advocate hard for ourselves but if our insurance won't pay we're stuck!

Dr. Tracy - I brought my article to my dr. the other day. He took it seriously and acknowledged there could be some differences. Point is the generic are less money so that's what docs are supposed to prescribe. Still if I had insisted he would have given me wellbutrin. I didn't insist because I've had no problems with it. Thanks for your comment.

I have been having an issue with the generic for Zoloft. My ins won't cover the brand name. I am feeling just a little worse than when I take the Zoloft. I also take a small dose of Bupropion. However, I never took Wellbutrin so I can't say that I would know if there were a difference or not. I do have to take the Bupropion in the morning because of the insomnia issue. I will say that it does give me a slight energy burst though. Thank you for putting this out there. It has made me realize that I need to call the doctor to have my brand name Zoloft forced through the insurance....even though the article wasn't entirely about that!
