Are Studies Confirming the Alcohol - Breast Cancer Link Being Confused?

Scientists Say It's the Amount of Alcohol Consumed, Not the Type

In an Oct. 12 press release, and in light of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR) reports that recent studies have confirmed that alcohol is indeed a risk factor for breast cancer. Specifically, the studies found that consuming more than three drinks a day can significantly raise the chances of getting breast cancer.

In September, a Kaiser Permanente study of alcohol consumption and breast cancer was presented at the European Cancer Conference. The study found that women who consume more than three drinks a day have a 30 percent increase in breast cancer risk compared to women who consume less than one drink a day. Women who drank one or two drinks a day had a 10 percent increase in breast cancer risk.

The results of these recent studies may be confusing because there are also several studies out that indicate drinking wine is good for the heart, perhaps even protecting against heart disease. It's understandable that women and others may therefore assume that drinking wine is healthier than beer or hard liquor. However, for breast cancer risk researchers say it's the amount of alcohol consumed, not the type.

Dr. Patrick Maisonneuve is the chairman of epidemiology at the European Institute of Oncology in Italy. He says the risk of developing breast cancer is linked to any type of alcohol in that "alcohol may elevate levels of estrogen, prolactin and other hormones potentially associated with a higher breast cancer risk." Women who drink heavily or on a regular basis are thus at higher risk for breast cancer, regardless of whether they drink wine, beer or hard liquor.

I know a woman who was alcoholic and ended up with two mastectomies. Her doctor told her the drinking was partly to cause. She still thinks he is crazy and continues to drink. It is hard for anyone that has those kinds of problems to relate to it being their own fault. Any cancer is a terrible thing and if this article helps just one person, you are to be applauded. Wonderful article.

This is why I don't trust doctors, scientists or other professionals. Those fields are constantly changing. Although I am glad that I don't really drink, just in case this proves to be true.

Cancer is rampant on both sides of my family. So I forego alcohol just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the clarification report about breast cancer and alcohol. Nowadays, it is so hard to know which research reports about health issues to believe! Great article.

I wonder about the conflicting reports. I just try to stay moderate when I drink (but sometimes I get carried away!). Thanks for the information.

Interesting article. I have wondered about the conflicting opinions.

I don't think they can ever be 100% sure, because the variables in each person's life can never be controlled 100%. To create a control group, they would have to live in some kind of bubble (inhumane) all of their lives. Then, that would not be a good control group because they aren't exposed to any other factors people with cancer have. Anyway, great report thanks for sharing the info and awarenss of breast cancer.

These studies can be very confusing. Great article.

This really re-inforces the statement "everything in moderation".

Great article! I have to agree with Nicholos. They should be 100% sure before releasing information to the public. It's never good to be misinformed about something so important.

Cancer is such a horrible disease. I'm glad they are doing research but something I think these doctors/researcher teams/etc are just publishing papers to get their names in a medical journal and create some sort of clout index for themselves.
