I bet this topic has got your attention. It's a misconception that you must pay for your child's college education. Whoever came up with the idea that you must pay for something that an adult can do for themselves should be forced to stand in the corner for an hour. Your child will be an adult when they enter college right? The key word here is adult.

Your only responsibility is to provide food and shelter for your child until they reach the age of 18 years old. After that point it's all gravy for your kids. Get off the guilt train right now and smarten up.

Am I suggesting that you not contribute to your child's college education? The main point of this article to break your mindset from the ridiculous view that you need to pay for your child's college education. If you want to stash away some money in a 529 account or some type of college investment account that's perfectly fine while they grow up. However, your main responsibility is to educate your child to be self-sufficient when they become an adult. In our society, 18 years old is an adult.

Do what you can in regards to participating in their college savings, but they should carry the burden for the bulk of their college costs. After all, you have a retirement to pay attention to don't you? We'll touch more on this fact in a moment. (Note: If you are millionaires with cash to burn then this article isn't for you.)

After high school your child needs to learn how to work and it's their choice to continue to college. Think about it that for a moment. You shouldn't be responsible for another adult's actions and that's what your child will become when they reach 10 years of age. If they choose to continue they're education they should bare the brunt of the expense. Again, do what you can with helping them out. However, they should carry the majority of the burden and not you. It's a tough world out there and having them work before and during college will give them a true appreciation for what they are experiencing and will experience after they graduate.
