Is Allan Houston Crazy?

16
Allan Houston recently re-signed with the New York Knicks. His decision to make a comeback at age 36 has sparked much fan debate. The biggest question is why? What is motivating him?

MONEY: Allan Houston signed a 6 year/100 million dollar contract in 2001. It is still considered one of the most outlandish NBA contracts ever signed. He also could of signed for more than the minimal NBA salary based on name alone but choose the cash-strapped New York Knicks. He isn't motivating by money

CHAMPIONSHIP: The New York Knicks won 33 games last season. Almost every team in the eastern conference is much improved. The New York Knicks will be lucky to make the playoffs. While Isiah Thomas was a great player and has a good draft record he is a very average coach and an even worse team president. Allan Houston turned down offers from both the Cleveland Cavs and the Dallas Mavs; both far superior teams. He could of played a much larger role with the Cleveland Cavs who made the finals last year. They are desperate for shooters to compliment LeBron James, especially now they are without Aleksander Pavlovic. He obviously is not motivated by winning a championship.

PLAYING TIME: Allan Houston retired prior to the 2005-2006 because of a arthritic left knee that limited him to only 70 games in his final two seasons.

Allan Houston was an excellent shooter especially from 3 point range(40.2%) and from the free throw line (86.3%). He was however a very one dimensional player elsewhere. He averaged only 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists for his career and he is 36.

Assuming Allan Houston is completely healthy he still has several players ahead of him, all with guaranteed money. There have been rumors however that Jerome James or perhaps Malik Rose could be bought out. Allan Houston obviously is not interested in playing time as he will be buried on the New York Knicks bench.

If Allan Houston doesn't need money, want a championship, and could find more playing time elsewhere, why is he coming back?
