Superman Returns opens this week in theaters all over the world amid much hoopla. The big selling point is that Superman Returns reinvents the Man of Steel for a whole new audience. Apparently, the story takes place after the events of Superman II and completely ignores the other two Chris Reeve sequels. That’s a good thing. Last year the same thing happened with Batman Begins. An all new actor and an all new makeover allows those whose saw them to forget all about Val Kilmer and George Clooney. I’ve only seen parts of those two movies, mercifully. First Batman gets a new lease on life and now Superman. It tends to bring up an age-old debate that still rages between the fans of both superheroes.

Superman versus Batman. Who would win? It’s been a debate going back as long as the two have been around. I really don’t see why it’s a debate, however. The answer is so simple: Batman would destroy Superman.

It’s a simple deduction that Superman fans seem curiously unable to grasp. Let’s face facts here, people, if Kal-el, Superman’s real name, were back on Krypton, he’d probably be a newspaper reporter there, too. Why? Because on his home planet of Krypton, Kal-el would have no special powers. He wouldn’t be able to fly and see through things like he does here on Earth. He would be just another average guy because, well, on Earth he’s just another guy who just so happens to be able to fly and see through things. Superman doesn’t catch the bad guys because of superior intelligence or reasoning; he catches them because he’s faster and stronger. But back on Krypton he wouldn’t have that advantage. So, you see, whether Clark Kent or Kal-el, the guy would probably be holding the same job.

Batman proves he would have no trouble handlng the mediocrity of Superman's non-super powers.

Takeaways
  • Superman would be a reporter whether on Earth or Krypton.
  • Superman is a hero by virtue of the vagaries of physics.
  • Batman is a self-made hero with superior brains.
Did You Know?
Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher and Henry Cavill were all at one time considered for the parts of both Batman and Superman.

You don't seriously expect me to take this 'Batman-would-win' line seriously, do you? Alright, w. the Kryptonite ring Superman gave him, Batman would have a fighting chance, that I'll say. And hey, I don't want to come across as dissing BM. But come one: Superman would win, bar nothing. BM may have a plan to take down Superman, sure, but that doesn't mean it'd work. And as the pt. above says, even a mountain of Kryptonite for a good time exposed, couldn't kill Superman: And his fight w. Doomsday proved Superman can come back from the dead. BM can't. None of his martial arts, gadgets and the like could save BM from Superman's super-power. Even if BM has the kryptonite ring, SM could simply rush in and scoop up BM using super speed before BM could even blink. But this debate shows how inseparable SM and BM really are. For one rules by fear and the other through hope. Think about that. They can't have one way to deal w. everything. But I love how SM loves to ride in the B'mobile!

superman could fly batman to space and drop him , obviously killing him instantly. hold on maybe on the way down superman would fly warp speed and punch though batmans face..get it batman is only HUMAN. no super powers, just a rich guy with a goofy utility belt

It's funny you bring up the movie Superman Returns. I think you forgot that in that movie Superman raised a kryptonite MOUNTAIN (not a little sliver a mountain) from the depts of the ocean to the reaches of outer space.. without dying I might add. So how is Batman is basically going to have to get kryptonite two times the size of that structure seen in the movies. The only thing that can harm Superman is kryptonite and magic. I doubt batman is smart enough to invent magic gadgets. Other than that, batman has no chance. You forget.. Superman can live longer than Batman. Picture this: The proclamation has been made. Superman vs Batman, who would win? Superman can just chill until Bruce Wayne becomes an old fart and bam.. Batman is done. Or Superman can go extreme and destroy the earth. Last time I checked, Superman can survive in space, Batman can't

You guys forget that Superman completed owned Batman in "Superman Sacrafice". He nearly beat Batman to death if the Justice League watchtower gun turrets didn't intervene. Also in "Lex Luthor: Man of Steel Superman owns Batman yet again. Lastly in "Justice" a weakend Superman KO's Batman with one punch.

You guys forget Batman likes sex with Robin. BTW don't make me bring out the countless silver age comics in which superman owned batman repeatedly? just check out superdickery.com ...

Unlike Lex Luther in Superman Returns, Batman would have taken the sharp piece of knife-shaped Kryptonite and rammed it through Supermans eye into his brain, or possibly driven it deep into his heart with a sledge hammer impregnated with Kryptonite. I agree, Batman would have won.

umm, your theory on how batman would win is good, but we do have to remember, although superman isnt bright, he is one of the stronger on krypton, if it existed, you see, thats how he was able to defeated zod and his followers, he is, the son of krypton, jor-el was a powerful man remember, kal-el would have the upperhand over batman on krypton

This was an amazing article. Batman completely owns Superman. End of discussion.

Yeah, I've got The Dark Knight. Now that should be turned into a movie!

Chuckle. He did, in The Dark Knight Returns, and in a JLA comic where it was revealed that Batman had a plan in place to take down each one of the Justice League, should they ever go rogue... Geek that I am.
