Do you ever wonder why so many children are abducted each year? Predators. Molesters. Sick-os. They're all after our children. And it seems that no matter how many programs air on TV about them, they are still successful in their efforts. Part of the problem is that the general public is caught-up in too many myths about whom actually is harming children and what to tell their children about fending them off. So here's a few myth-busters you'll want to share with your family. It'll increase their level of safety and keep them alert to the reality of child abductors.
Myth 1 - Only dirty old men rape children. Many people think older men are the ones who desire to sexually assault children. However, the truth is that the vast majority of child predators are men under the age of 40. These men are baseball coaches, priests, teachers and even youth pastors. They use their position to influence children to do things that hurt them. Therefore, if you see a man who fits this profile focusing on your child, beware. He's desires may be tainted. So take the time to check him out and set boundaries that limit his access to your child.
Myth 2 - Only strangers seek out children. The first thing most parents tell their child is to 'beware of strangers.' Although this is wise advice, the truth is that most child molesters and abductors know the families of their prey. They've endeared themselves in some way so the child and the parents both feel safe when they're around. Therefore, it's better to tell your child to 'beware of any adult attempting to touch you in an uncomfortable way.' This advice will keep them on the look-out for any adult who inappropriately approaches them and empower them to say 'no' or at least tell a parent.
