What do the movies, Soul Food, Waiting to Exhale, and A Thin Line between Love and Hate, have in common? All were great movies that were geared toward blacks that came out during the 90's. In recent years there seems to be a lack of black films in Hollywood. Tyler Perry is slowly but surely helping to change that. With great movies like the one released this month, Why did I Get Married, Perry is helping to bring African Americans back into movie theaters.

Tyler Perry got his start through writing. Perry would write in a journal and create characters for his stories. He did this writing while being homeless and living out of his car. Eventually his journal writing led to his first musical titled "I Know I've been Changed." Perry would continue to write several plays and musicals grossing millions of dollars. He would soon take his talent to Hollywood. He now has created four films, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion, Daddy's Little Girl, and his new movie Why Did I Get Married. Perry's films have grossed well over $100 million dollars.

Perry's movies have all included mainly black actors. He has worked with famous African American actors such as Blair Underwood, Kimberly Elise, Janet Jackson and Boris Kodjoe. These are names and faces that are quite popular in the black community. These actors have made a name for themselves in the world of film as well as music and television.

Perry's movies have two great qualities. The first is that they are movies that the entire family can see. The movies are fun, sexy, and thought provoking yet the entire family can go out together to see it. This is something that has been missing from black films as of late. The second thing that makes his films so great is that they are fun yet all have a moral. All his films teach an important lesson about love, relationships or just life in general. Most of these lessons are ones that the black community needs to hear. They need someone to remind them about these things. Perry not only entertains his audience, but he teaches them at the same time.
