As those who frequently drink soda pop or any other bottled or canned beverage know, a beverage-drinking habit can get pretty costly over time. This leads some beverage drinkers to seek for lower-costing options, which often leads to store brands.

Big K, the Kroger store brand version of soda has a caffeinated citrus flavored soda called Big K Citrus Drop. Is it similar enough to Pepsi's Mountain Dew to be a suitable alternative?

Well, that depends on your tastebuds. If you are looking for something that tastes exactly like Mountain Dew, Citrus Drop will not be your answer. However, if you are open to a different citrus flavor in your pop, it may be worth your time and money.

Big K Citrus Drop is primarily focused on the citrus flavor of the grapefruit, while Mountain Dew seems to taste more like lemons.

I would say that Big K Citrus Drop is indeed refreshing and it does equal the amount of caffeine in Mountain Dew, as far as I can tell from experience.

The savings alone might be well worth a switch for some. A large 24 pack of Big K Citrus Drop cans has cost me as little as $3.00, never going over $3.50, while just a 12 pack of Mountain Dew is usually around $3.49. I have gotten a 12 pack of Big K Citrus Drop cans for as little as $1.66 on sale. The regular price is generally close to $2.00.

To be fair, there are times that Mountain Dew has special promotions, so I have gotten a 12 pack of Mountain Dew cans for as little as $2.50, but to be quite honest, that's a rarity. A 24 pack of Mountain Dew cans has cost me upwards of $7.49 and sometimes it's even cheaper or about the same value to buy two of the 12 packs.

I have found the taste of the Big K Citrus Drop to be quite good. The downside to it is that if I really want a Mountain Dew, the Citrus Drop will only suffice the craving for the moment, but then afterwards, I am still left wanting the actual Mountain Dew.

However, Citrus Drop gets points as well because there are times when I crave Citrus Drop instead of Mountain Dew.

Citrus drop tastes like win. and it stays carbonated longer than mountain dew. BUT blue mountain dew is superior to both.

One of the best things about Citrus Drop is the Diet version tastes great too! Better than Diet Mountain Dew (though that is better than most of the diet colas generally).

LOL Jasmine! Thanks! Oh, and I wish I could get down to only 2 per week. I'm at that per day. :-)

Eek, mountain dew is bad enough, now you tell me it's spawned copycats?
