The as-yet-unfulfilled dream of every single television channel in America is to get their programming onto the internet so that surfers who are eschewing television in the first place will watch their shows and increase advertising revenue. So far no network has thus far been very successful. A variety of reasons exist for this failure, of course, including the conventional wisdom that most Google videos and YouTube videos are less than five minutes long, and that is why those videos have such enormously larger hit numbers than full length episodes of sitcoms, dramas or movies. For instance, Netflix has been offering subscribers the opportunity to enjoy entire movies over the internet-and not just crappy movies either. Now I love movies probably more than anyone I've ever known-with the possible exception of my friend Mark whose love was such that he is now a film director himself-but so far I haven't taken advantage of the Netflix instant viewing option.
