The job of a stay at home mom can be an overwhelming one. Many moms may even experience some stay at home mom burnout. Staying on top of household chores, young children, your spouse, and errands and activities can actually be more time consuming than working a 9-5 job outside of the home. For stay at home moms trying to stay on top of the household chores without feeling overwhelmed, and still looking to save time for your little ones, here's a simple chore schedule that can help you stay on track.

Sunday
Sunday is the day that the stay at home mom should prepare for the week ahead. Keep in mind that if your spouse is home, this is the ideal day to accomplish one household task that might be more difficult when young children are present. Aim for one major project on Sunday, but then save the rest of the day for family time. I usually try to change and launder the sheets and towels on Sunday, and then do a major clean of either the kitchen or one bathroom.

Monday
As both parents and children return to the routines of school and work, Monday can be a hectic day for families. Focus on tidying up from the weekend. Do one load of laundry in the morning and be sure to put away any other clothes when time allows. Vacuum or sweep the entire house today, preferably in the evening before bedtimes.

Tuesday
Now that the family is settling back into their routine, you may be able to make time for more household chores. Depending on the size of your family, you may need to do another load of laundry today, or it might be able to wait until tomorrow. The goal is to keep the laundry accumulation to a minimum. Focus on one household task today that you can rotate weekly. I dust one week, and then do windows the following week. Again, try to keep up with general tidying (wiping table and counter tops, washing dishes) as time allows.

Wednesday
Use today to catch up. Don't schedule a new task. If you haven't been able to clean the kitchen or bathroom well, finish the dusting, or stay on top of the laundry, today is the day to do it.

Takeaways
  • Do some laundry every day, and try to avoid letting it pile up.
  • Save major tasks for Tuesdays, when the family is settling back into their routine.
  • Don't forget that the chores can always wait--make your family your priority!

Excellent suggestions for caregivers also, as we rarely have time for our own household chores.

Great advice! My biggest problem with keeping up with the chores is trying to find a routine in a house where the schedule changes every week. My husband works rotating shifts so trying to find time when he's home to help distract our daughter so that I can clean means finding a different day and time every week. I've pretty much given up other than what I can get done after she goes to bed. I think that if you have a regular routine though the kind of schedule you are suggesting would be great! For myself, I guess I will just keep trying to work chores in wherever I can.

I'm a stay at home with three girls (1, 3, and 5,) and I'll admit, keeping the house/family in order is always a work in progress.

Kelly, you sound like a gem of a mum and wife! My mum also stayed home, but my dad never really appreciated what hard work it was to stay home and care for me and my 2 brothers. Sophie

Glad you shared a routine that works for you. My peace of mind is that my house will be clean when the kids move out, lol.

Great tips I always try to remember - the household chores will always be there, but the children will not ;-) I can live with some clutter if it means more snuggle time or game time!

If I can't get it done today, there's always tomorrow!
