Dexter was conceived by writer Jeff Lindsay and the character was introduced to the world in Lindsay's novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter. The first season of the television adaptation was based on this first novel, though significant changes were made in regard to certain characters and plot, particularly in last season's finale. As a result, the second season is on its own course and will presumably not be based on the second novel. At this point, the reader should be warned that I will reveal major plot details from the first season, as well as reveal some details from the second season's first two episodes. If you aren't up to date with the series, it would be best to catch up!
Season two picks up roughly five weeks after the Ice Truck Killer is revealed and subsequently killed by Dexter. His sister Debra is still noticeably traumatized by her relationship with and attempted murder by the killer, though she slowly seems to be coping. Dexter and the aggressive Sergeant Doakes bumped heads last season, and as a result of Doakes' suspicion and general dislike of Dexter, he has spent the last month constantly following him. Unfortunately, this means that it has been impossible for Dexter to indulge in his murderous urges, and he "really needs to kill someone."
