Not all hospitals have open MRI's at this time. When I had to have one I didn't have a choice unless I wanted to travel a distance to have a MRI in an open unit. I was very nervous because I am severely claustrophobic. I felt very immature and foolish but I found out that I am not the only one who suffers from this anxiety.

I was given a few tips on what to do when I had my MRI. When I arrived for my appointment, I think they may have screwed up my appointment. It seems they quickly set up an appointment for me in a mobile unit. It could have been normal but it seemed that they were hustling and bustling around and a little confused about the whole thing. I was rushed in the mobile unit and told not to move a muscle and to hold my breath at certain times when they were photographing me. I hated it and kept my eyes closed. I tried to keep perfectly still. When it was over they told me I would have to have it done over again that the pictures were not clear and I had moved. The only thing worse about having an MRI is having to have it done over again! I also told them I would not pay for another one. I wasn't billed for the first one. I would have fought them on it if they did.

THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN HAVING TO GET A MRI IS HAVING TO GET IT DONE OVER AGAIN.

I was more prepared the next time. I told them that I was very claustrophobic and also hyperactive. They gave me a sedative and said they would talk me through it. You can also have someone that you trust come with you and be with you while it is being done. After the sedative I really didn't care that much. I had them give me a small towel to put over my eyes. I told the technicians that I was scared and claustrophobic and they were very considerate of my feelings. I didn't want anything over my nose or mouth but with a towel over my eyes I was not tempted to open them. If I didn't see what was happening or what I was in it was easier.

This freaked me out. But I think its more of the anticipation more than anything. I've had one before and I had no problems. matter of fact they kept telling me to wake up. But then on my next one, these guys didn't cover my eyes and I went in. I had to hold my arms above my head. That was uncomfortable and my heart started beating hard. I had to get the heck up out of dodge. The open right now was no better. If you have to get a head mri, they place this cage on you and it feels really weird.

The techs asked me if I was claustraphobic and I said "yes" but they just went on to the next question. I even called back because I read the Hospital website about and open MRI they had. They told me they were both closed for a neck MRI's and the test with the one close to me was only 15 minutes long and "better" than the open one. I couldn't believe my eyes when I got hustled in a traveling trailer containing a small child size torpedo tube! I had to scrunch my shoulders together to fit in, it was beyond horrible. When the machine started making horrendous "jackammer" booms after 8 minutes my sinuses started pounding and my stomach started heaving like I was having a migraine. I begged to be let out after 10 minutes because I couldn't take any more. I had hoped they had enough done to diagnose my neck problems but she said they had just started and pushed me off the table and told me to go. Lie after lie after lie from these Hospital people. I feel really let down that my one chanc

You know, we feel like idiots because machines like this freaks us out, but what are the inventors of these monsters thinking!?!?! Who in their right mind could lie there perfectly still as they're slowly passed through a closed in tunnel!?!?! Very good article!

They have open MRIs which should help. If you have serious claustrophobia in an MRI the Dr. will often prescribe a sedative. Great article

I had to have two after my car accident and I wasn't going to get the second one so they sent me 1.5 hours away to an open machine - it was worth it!! The first one the sweet tech kept announcing the time - 4 more minutes, 3 more minutes, etc. She threw in all these you're doing great and good jobs but I felt like an idiot when it was all over having to have her do it but she said 75% of the people have trouble but still... LOL

I had one once that lasted over an hour. Before it was over I felt like my skin was crawling, my heart was beating out of my chest, and I was screaming inside my head. And I'm not claustrophic as far as I know. That's just too long to leave someone in such a tight space.

Excellent article. I had a very hard time with it. The noisiness was the most difficult part. I kept my eyes closed and forced myself to think about pleasant things.
