I recall 30 years ago, as a young assistant manager, I was invited over to my manger's house for a Saturday morning planning session for the next week. It just so happened that my manager was Jewish and had lox and bagels with a slice of onion, some cream cheese and coffee. I was very, very sheltered and had no idea what a bagel; let alone what lox were. I was brave enough to try the food; loved the bagel and cream cheese; had a big problem with the lox.

If you fast forward many years you will find a guy (me) who still doesn't like lox but loves bagels and cream cheese.

There are a couple of products that put me in mind of the "old days".

The first product is "Theodoro Cinnamon Raison Sliced Bagels". This is a six-pack of bagels that costs just $1.19 for a one pound five ounce plastic bag. That is just about 20 cents per bagel and these bagels are very big.

Each bagel weighs a whopping 99 grams. One bagel is considered a serving. Each bagel has 250 calories but there are only 5 calories from fat. That is only one fat gram per bagel.

These bagels have raisins and a cinnamon flavor that is simply outstanding. I prefer my bagel toasted with cream cheese. However, it is also good with butter and jelly as well as sandwich "bread".

The companion product that goes with the bagel only costs $1.19 as well. It is "Coburn Farms Soft Cream Cheese Spread". For the $1.19, you get an eight ounce tub of great cream cheese.

Both of these products are distributed by Save-A-Lot.

A serving size of the cream cheese is about two tablespoons; there are about eight servings per tub of cheese; there are nine fat grams per serving, of which six are from saturated fat. Further, there are 90 calories per serving of which 80 are from fat.

If you add the calories of these two products together, you will get 340 calories for a bagel and cream cheese; 85 calories coming from fat.

A bagel and some cream cheese are great in the morning with some coffee; they are great as a snack and it is great as a before-bed "eat". As I said previously, these bagels also work well as a sandwich addition. Both products are very versatile and can be used for many things.
