Otoplasty, or ear cosmetic surgery, is a fairly common procedure that is performed by plastic surgeons. There are various types of otoplasty, but one of the most well known involve bringing the ears closer to the head. This is also referred to as ear pinning. Another one of the common forms of otoplasty is when large ears are reconstructed to look smaller. Is otoplasty really worth it, however? Here, we will weigh the pros and cons of ear cosmetic surgery in order to help you determine whether or not this is a procedure that you may want to consider going through with.

What are the Pros of Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, much like any other type of reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, exists for appearance purposes. There are many instances in which a person may not be too happy with their ears. In some cases, the ears may stick out too far away from the head, but in other cases, the ears just may be too large in general. Whatever the case may be, a general dislike towards your own ears may cause you to feel a lack of confidence in yourself. By choosing to have otoplasty, or ear cosmetic surgery, you will be able to gain that confidence that you once lacked. There are not any health benefits associated with having otoplasty, as it is purely a comsetic surgery in most cases (although there are some cases in which tumors may play a role in a person's decision to have otoplasty). Many people would consider having otoplasty to having a nose job, as it is just something that you may want to have done if you do not enjoy your ears the way that they are.

If I had really large ears that bothered me, I might consider it. But, probably not. The young man in the picture does look better. It probably boosted his self esteem. :-)

Excellent article! I would never have any cosmetic surgery done, unless it was medically related, but that's just me. I like the way God made me, "flaws" and all. :-)

Thanks for the comments! I agree, Sophie, I don't think I could go through with it either, but the appearance of my ears don't bother me. I'm glad to hear your brother had great results, Lisa!

I've heard of people wanting to get this done, but it wouldn't be for me. I'd rather stick with what I've already got. Sophie
