Everyday when not in school, I vividly recall sirens, burn outs, screeching skids, everything that one would hear. Than one morning there was a "lull" in highway activity. You know that exact time when you feel you are the only one in the world alive for about two seconds.
I looked out the picture window and so no cars on this highway of life. My elbows supported my head as I sat perplexed at this sight of invisibility. Then I saw it. It was a red blur that moved liked high speed blood velocity spatter does in a crime show. This car was really moving all by itself. What puzzled me was that it was without sound. It was like watching a single falcon swooping down for its kill. Swift, silent, deadly.
I could make out the shape of the vehicle, and I knew it was a foreign car. Domestic cars moving like that one did would create a shift noise you could even hear the gear changes easily back then, but not on this one. A guy up our street had a car like this, but I had no idea what it was. I left the house and had to see for myself. The silent speedster was a Porsche. Awesome. This car was my dream. It moved like a bullet through cold desolate arctic air. Nothing could catch or stop this car. As I write about this decades later, I never was able to own a Porshe. I did however in my senior year at highschool was given a ride in that neighbors Porsche that he kept since I was a kid, when I was hitchhiking. I remember my neighbor shifting this piece of moving fluid steel completely noiseless, and recall only once something similar. The take off of a plane, that acceleration, and exhilaration that one feels as you can hear your own heartbeat.
But without the noise of a airplane.
