Little Brother's Get Back: Early Album Review
Has Little Brother Found Its Stride Without 9th Wonder?
Little Brother is known for being a group of very consciously inclined rappers. The North Carolina-based trio has recently become a duo. 9th Wonder, the producer of the group, recently parted ways with the group before the start of their new album, Get Back. Now, Phonte and Big Pooh are on their own to either sink or swim. Will they be able to reach the mainstream finally? The first single off of Get Back is the Illmind produced Good Clothes. The track is one of the catchiest on the album. The song talks about how people love rocking their favorite brand of clothes even when they do not have the money for it. The beat is incredibly catchy and helps to add to the replay value of the song. The lyrical content is definitely different than other songs in the marketplace which is a good thing.
On Breakin' My Heart, Little Brother are joined by New Orleans based rapper Lil Wayne. The track was produced by former Little Brother member 9th Wonder. The song features a catchy soul sample inspired beat. Lil Wayne drops a traditionally strong featured verse on the track.
On Extra Hard, Little Brother spit over a Denaun Porter provided beat. Denaun is most well known for being a member of Eminem's rap posse D-12. The beat to this track is definitely very catchy and Little Brother spit very strong verses over the beat.
On Step It Up, Little Brother are joined by producer Hi-Tek and his protégé R&B vocalist Dion. The song talks about having to step your game up to get certain females. The song features a mellow almost West Coast inspired beat which is very catchy.
On the Nottz produced Two Step Blues, Little Brother are joined by soul singer Darien Brockington. The song features a very well produced up-tempo beat and Darien adds a lot to the track with a strong vocal delivery. The song will make you feel the urge to just get up and dance.
Dreams is a classic Little Brother record. This is was you would expect from a Little Brother track. The song is very solid and is one of the standout tracks.
