In our misogynist society, it's not uncommon for subtle clues of female subjugation to go unnoticed. For example, in terms name calling, men as a matter of cultural routine will derogatorily refer to each other as "girlie men", "ladies", "sissies", and "bitches". It is simply assumed that women are inferior, and therefore to be called a woman is to be called something less than a man. It's really pretty screwed up when you think about it. Recently, I had a debate with a man who suggested that transsexual women are great to date because they don't believe in feminism. You could have knocked me over with a feather, and so I asked around, and it seemed a lot of men agreed. They figured (erroneously) that since a transsexual woman "chooses" to be a woman that she is therefore subject to the same subjugation as women, and she made her choice when she got snipped.

I am here to say that not only do transsexual women have the right and the responsibility to be feminists, but men too have the responsibility to be feminists. When a transsexual woman gives up that flap of skin that society has determined makes her male, she may be cast into a gender that is subjugated, but it doesn't take away her right to be equal as a human being sharing this planet. Furthermore, even men owe it to women to be feminists. According to the dictionary, feminism is "the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men" and a feminist is "A person whose beliefs and behavior are based on feminism".

Forget what you think you know about angry bra burning, ugly, hairy, book wormy, fat women with B.O. and Birkenstocks. That is an archaic stereotype that does nothing for equality and is in fact archaic and stupid. The fact is that you either advocate social, political and other rights of women to be equal to those of men or you do not. If you truly believe in the equality of women to men, as I do, then you owe it to society to stand out as the hardcore feminist that you really are. The thing about equality is that it is, by nature a requirement for there to be no exception. Equality with exceptions is a paradox that implodes under its own weight.

Takeaways
  • Feminism is not about hatred
  • Feminism is not about anger
  • Feminism is about equality
