Whether you're visiting a theme park or thinking about working at one, there are several myths you've probably heard. In the summer of 2004, I decided to take a position working for a local theme park. While there, I learned that several things I thought I knew about theme parks were false. But, there were also some things that were true. Here are just a few myths you should know about before visiting or working for a theme park.

Theme Park Myths: Employees Are Well Paid

I had heard that theme parks paid their employees very little. I had even spoke to people who had lived in Florida that explained that even some of the biggest theme parks only paid minimum wage to most of their employees. This myth would prove to be true. I was only paid $0.35 above minimum wage. Theme parks mostly rely on students. But, even employees who had worked there for years were only making around $1.35 above minimum wage.

Theme Park Myths: The Rides Are Safe

This theme park myth is true. The theme park I worked for employed people whose main job was to maintain the rides and fix any problems that may occur. Theme parks will close rides to repair them. They would rather their guests be safe, even if it means listening to complaints.

Theme Park Myths: Season Passes Are Worth the Money

This is another theme park myth that is true. Even if you just visit two times throughout the entire season, you've got your money's worth. Many theme parks give outstanding deals on season passes. They know that their real money will come from concessions and souvenirs. Also, many theme parks give their season pass owners discounts at their restaurants.

Theme Park Myths: Tickets Cost Less at the Park

This myth is false. Companies throughout the area will offer lower prices on season passes and one day passes. Why? The reason is simple. You are already at that business to buy other goods and the business has purchased these tickets at a discount. It's their way of saying thanks to their customers. Shop around so that you find the best deal possible.

Thanks for debunking some commonly held beliefs. I would have thought the pay would be quite high. Sophie

Yep, we used to have season passes, when we lived near a major theme park. It was great to load up a bunch of tots and buggies and just walk around for an hour or two. No need to cram in a whole day, just to get your money's worth. What fun is that, with a tiny tot?

Scary to think you ran rides with such little training.

I agree with the season tickets. For example, you can get a season pass for Six Flags Over Georgia that pays for itself in two to three visits. If you live in the area you can't beat it. Good article. Unique topic.
