I'm always on the lookout for new, easy-to-use software to make my computing life simpler and more efficient. One of the "problems" facing a lot of computer users is how to keep track of information that you might not need to keep a hold of for a long time, but don't want to lose in the short term.

One of the time-honored means of keeping track of that information, obviously, has been 3M's Sticky Note. The Sticky Note can be found on many, Many, MANY computer monitors and desktops around the globe, but I've never been a fan of them for some reason. They work well enough, but a lot of the information I want to keep track of is longer (and therefore not all that convenient to copy down to paper), in a format (such as a web graphic) that isn't able to be copied to a Sticky Note, or else will need to remain in digital form for reuse.

There are, of course, digital solutions to this problem. I've written about a couple of them. But the problem with the traditional "digital" sticky note (such as the Stickies program that Apple includes with the operating system) and other, similar, programs, is that they're always there. Now, if I'm looking for a reminder, that's great. But if I'm just looking store information temporarily, I don't want it in my face all the time. I want it available - easily available - but not always in view.

A program I found recently, called Edgies, seems to solve that problem nicely. Edgies uses the sticky note idea, but instead of having dozens of "floating" sticky notes all over my computer monitor's screen, I have dozens of little tabs, tucked away and out of the way, on the very edges - left, right and bottom - of the screen.

To make a new tab, simply drag your mouse to whichever edge of the screen you want. You'll see a little preview tab appear. Click and the tab will be created. From here, simply type whatever note you wish. You can also create a tab by selecting text (from a word processor or web page), and drag that text to the edge of the screen.

Edgies keeps all your notes tucked to the side of the screen by way of slide-out drawers.
