In the realm of the horror movie, however, there are some constants; a well directed and well acted movie, of course, is more scary than its lesser peers, and big points must be awared to unique films. Keeping this in mind, here's a list of the five scariest movies in cinema--and if you disagree, there's always the comment section if you'd like to tell me what movies deserved a spot more.
5. The Descent - Surprise is a big factor in this cave thriller, so I'll leave it simple and say that several women get lost in an uncharted cave, to dire consequences. Viewers of the movie will remember the, er, other details that make this flick such a necessary rental. The use of atmosphere and special effects, combined with a dynamite script that doesn't flinch from any of its horrifying subjects, make this recent film a worthy entry.
4. The Ring - The movie that introduced Japanese-style horror to America is still the best example of the genre. A reporter views a flick and immediately receives a phone call that tells her she'll die seven days after seeing it. If this is the type of premise that severely messes with your psyche, then you'll know that The Ring will scare the hell out of you. However, those who are more scared by earthly phenomenon will be better served by some of the other choices on this list.
3. The Last House on the Left - Wes Craven's low budget 70's work shows in unflinching detail the torture and murder of two girls by a street gang for its first half, then turns more grotesque as the parents of one of the girls allow the murderers to stay at their house for a night. Once the parents discover what the gang had done, they set about to dispatching them in some of the most repulsively gory ways in movie history. The viewer must confront the atrocities on film and ask himself whether something so vicious should be enjoyable, or endorsed given the brutal nature of the gang's earlier murders; it's a harrowing, shocking, and dark experience that most viewers won't want to see more than once.
