He was placed out as an infant, to die by the vicious atmosphere of Krypton in it's most violent time. He then died as a baby, and was harvested again with whatever was left, to only die again.
Perfection was the goal of this madness, as each time he died and recreated, he came closer to perfection. However, the memory of these agonizing deaths would remain imprinted on Doomsday's brain and force him to hate all life.
He was the only one out of the Superman villains to be successful in defeating the Justice League, which brought Superman's full attention. He was so powerful, that he was able to defeat the team with one hand bound behind him.
There was only one of the group who had any chance of defense against Doomsday, and that was Maxima. Once Superman and Doomsday meet, they are ready to battle. Much unlike other Superman villains, Doomsday was more than a match for Superman, and in one battle, they both fought hard and long, with Superman taking serious damage and losing strength quickly. Both of them would continue to fight, neither would concede.
At the end of possibly the greatest comic book battle of all time, each of the fighters simultaneously struck the other with a fatal blow. This is where the 'death of Superman' came in at.
Doomsday was taken by a Cyborg, and was sent to a faraway place where readers assumed he would stay, however, this was not the case. Doomsday was to be put together one more time, ever reaching that perfect form.
