Is Joel Osteen Too Positive?: Reflections from Personal Experience

On His Book Release, Message Deliverance Strategies, and More

Recently Joel Osteen has released his book "Become A Better You", which has received national attention and was second in pre-sales, only to "Harry Potter".

Because of this attention, and also because his church is so popular, many things are being said about Joel Osteen. Some say he is being too positive or giving people a false sense of hope. He is said to preach the "prosperity gospel", which "leads everyone to believe that everything is
good all the time". Some have also said that Joel may be "in this for the money".

As a member of Pastor Joel Osteen's church, I also felt the need to talk about this man. Not only have we watched him on television for some time, but once we moved to Houston, our family decided to become members of his church.

As for the money thing, I have personally heard Joel mention that he takes no salary from the church offerings. His money comes from his book sales. Personally, I think that is a very noble act on a pastor's part not to take a salary from the offerings, especially in a church as large as Joel's. He has the largest church in America. Not only that, but I have seen and felt Joel's feelings shine through as he delivers his message.

He truly enjoys what he is doing and I have seen him cry for the people listening to his messages more than once. They are real tears. Osteen really cares for the people of this world and he wants to help them find their way to God. This is his calling and he is doing an excellent job with it. There is no way to calculate the multitudes of lives Joel has touched. However, I can honestly say that he has touched the lives of our entire family.

As for his message deliverance, from experience, I say that while Pastor Osteen does give hope, he does not "sugar-coat life", as some have said. In fact, he readily admits that bad things do happen. It is my experience that Joel gives his listeners, viewers, and members the push of hope and faith in God that they need to overcome any obstacles life may bring; big or small.

I believe we all need to be "offended" sometimes...if it leads us back to the throne of Grace, then so be it.

Wolf in sheep's clothing. I love how he said God spoke to him, telling him that He wanted for Osteen to become a man who has a net worth of 75 million dollars. Must be nice. I guess God only cares for certain people to be filthy rich.

I just discovered Joel Osteen by accident about 2 weeks ago. He was on the tv when I turned it on and I became so interested in his sermon that I couldn't turn it off. I think it's great to preach a positive message. I hope to see more of Joel Osteen. I have to find out when he is on in my area.

we are nothing, so why should we feel good about ourselves? i have more questions that i've thought of since last being on this website...have you ever heard joel preach on the subject of sin? and i dont mean he just mentioned it a few times in a message. i mean that the entire message was focused on sin and that we are sinners. do you think there should be messages like this in a church (maybe not EVERY time but occasionally)? also, i remember that there are no crosses or religious symbols at lakewood's auditorium. doesn't this concern you that joel purposely decided against putting a cross anywhere in the room? sorry for the long reply. hope all is going well!

hmm interesting. i agree with most of what you are saying. i think there are definitely times in our lives that God wants us to be strong, but there are other times when bad things happen and He wants us to feel defeated because it forces us to rely solely on His power, not on our own. the American public has bought into this idea that we always need to feel good and happy, even when confronted with a sermon that says we are sinners. we weren't made to always feel happy and good about ourselves, we constantly screw up, and to know that God still loves us is amazing and something we will never completely wrap our minds around here on earth. "becoming a better you" is all about self-esteem and self-help. are these things biblical? no, i dont think they is. there is never a point in time when God commands us to feel good about ourselves or what we can do. He never tells us to figure out ways we can increase our self-esteem. instead He says that without Him, we are nothing, so

I think sermons can and sometimes do offend, especially if you are doing something wrong that is brought up. It's not always guaranteed that every single person's situations or life issues will be brought up every time at any church. For some, they may hear about something they need to fix each and every time. For others, it may take a while. Then, for yet others, they may not always relate the pastor's words to their own situations. I have heard messages where I knew it related to me (most everyone has). I just take everything as a life lesson, even things another person might react negatively to. I feel everything has it's purpose and when seemingly negative situations arise, there is always something positive to find and bring out of them. I think Joel has a way of letting people know there are things that need to be fixed without making them feel like failures. God wants us to be strong, not feel defeated every time something bad happens.
