Fox Television network's most successful show, American Idol, has introduced a major phenomenon in the category of reality TV. Millions of hopeful Americans turn out every season for a chance at earning a coveted audition with reality TV "sweethearts" Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. Each season, the show has turned out a unique champion, and now, six winners are underneath the show's proverbial belt. But some believe that winning this very desirable title doesn't necessarily guarantee one the life of a major Hollywood star. Take a look at the show's past winners and judge for yourself.

Season One Winner:
Kelly Clarkson (The Trendsetter)

You can tell that a person has "made it" in Hollywood when said celebrity's name is blurted out in films as a part of the pop culture. In the 2005 hit comedy, "The 40 Year-Old Virgin", actor Steve Carell blurts out the name "Kelly Clarkson!" while he's having his mass of chest hair waxed off for the sake of scoring with the ladies. Upon winning the coveted title of "American Idol", Kelly and her career took off. She won fans and judges over with her delicate blend of soul and cross-over appeal, belting out hit songs with enviable confidence. America loved Kelly because she represented all the young women in the world who were struggling to seek an identity for themselves. Breaking the mold of what a young 20-something female pop star should sound and look like, Kelly presented an unbelievably rational approach to immediate celebrity status. Combine that with powerful production, strong vocals, and heavy marketing, and an instant success was born.

Season Two Winner: Ruben Studdard (The Underdog)

With so many talented African American singers hiding out in churches and gospel choirs across America, it was refreshing to see a lovably overweight young black man wooing crowds with his smooth, mature vocals. Week after week of American Idol's Season Two, Alabama native Ruben Studdard received both praise and criticism from judges on his performances. But one thing remained constant: Ruben Studdard definitely became America's "Velvet Teddy Bear."

Takeaways
  • Carrie Underwood's personality has been called into question on several celebrity blogs.
  • Soul singer, Fantasia Barrino has enjoyed the most R&B chart success of all the Idol winners.
  • Jordin Sparks is perhaps the freshest American Idol face in the show's history.
Did You Know?
Taylor Hicks' hair began graying at the age of 13.
