Flipping through the channels one night I learned so much unnecessary news I felt like I was trapped in a video version of Trivial Pursuit. Channel after channel I learned more about what's going on in the life of celebrities then about anything important going on in the world.

I began to wonder what Americans may really know about that is going on around them. So I looked into the current buzzes and learned the things that we Americans are more likely to be aware of. Then I looked into some things that seemed like they would be important and more often then not I had a hard time getting any information on it.

Here are the things that we are more likely to know:

Lindsey Lohan had cocaine in her pocket when she was arrested on July 24th of this year. This of course was after police received a call that Lindsey was chasing her assistant's mother.

Britney Spears had an emergency hearing to get over night visitation 1 night a week

That Jennifer Lopez is pregnant and oh yeah, it might be twins

That Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have moved into a deluxe penthouse apartment In New York

That Danny Bonaduce tossed Johnny Fairplay Off of him at the Reality TV Awards and now he is going to be sued for it

That Scott Baio was 45 and single

That Pamela Anderson Married Rick Solomon

That Charlie Sheen sent nasty emails to Denise Richards

That Victoria and David Beckham moved to the United States (whippy!)

That Madonna is working on a deal that will land her $120 Million Dollar Contract

That Paris Hilton was spotted with Kid Rock (WOW, I'll definitely sleep better at night).

Now here are the things that the average American television viewer is less likely to know:

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes

There are 13.3 stolen identities stolen per minute. In a day that would equal 1,440 minutes in a day times 13.3 = 19,152

9 out of 10 (between the ages of 8 and 16) children have viewed pornography on the Internet.

1 out of 5 children have been sexually solicited on the Internet in the past year.

Only 1 out every 3 parents had some kind of parental controls on their computer

On average 3 U.S. Soldiers die each day.

I think celebrity news and gossip is so popular because people like to see what's going on in that other "world" known as Hollywood. For some reason we (meaning ordinary people) take pleasure in seeing the pampered and privileged of Tinseltown go through so much drama. It's like watching a really interesting soap opera. Great article!

This is so true and so discouraging. What an excellent topic you chose and what a good job you did covering it.
