Senator Barack Obama took questions today in a conference call from a farm in Fairfax, Iowa. The Senators intent was to unveil his rural policy agenda, which he called: Real Leadership for Rural America.

Obama held rural issues forums in Adel, in July and Tama, in August to talk with local Iowans about the challenges they face and how they deal with them. The insight he gleaned from these meetings are what he claims to have based his rural policy agenda upon. He hopes that this agenda will revitalize and strengthen rural America.

Obama said that his plan will balance concerns of conservation that he thinks people in Iowa find important. "I'm really pleased with the proposal that we have put together. We encourage organic agriculture and we encourage energy efficiency," he said ...."We are going to help small businesses in rural communities by bringing more nurses and doctors," he added.

Obama said that they want to encourage community colleges and invest in an infra structure. He also said that they want to implement more broadbands that will make it easier for more businesses to move into rural America.

He took questions from four journalists during the call. I asked him what he intends to do about the Tuberculosis (TB) epidemic. "We are seeing more drug resistant strains of TB, we need to create a public health system," Obama said.

I also asked him what he intends to do about TB immunized immigrants who test positive being forced to take Isonizaid which causes liver damage.

"I am not aware of it but I will have my people investigate it," he said. "We need to provide health care to all Americans... In particular...we need to make sure that better health care is operating in rural communities," Obama said.

Chuck Peterson of Enterprise Journal, St Ansgar, Iowa, invited a response from Obama: "We see a lot of stuff on the internet... You refuse to wear a pin of the American flag when you are out campaigning," he said. Obama's response was: "This is a case of a mountain being made out of a mole hill. I have nothing against people who are expressing their patriotism. I think it is fine."

Good story. Obama's personable but there's a little of Dorothy and Toto in his outlook. If you look at just about all new presidencies, especially Bush's, you'll see they face a foreign policy challenge right away. Think Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Think Bush and 9-11. Think Clinton and the 1st World Trade Center bombing. There are far better Democrats than the ones they're running.

Thanks for this grassroots coverage!

For some reason I still think of Baraka from Mortal Kombat II whenever I hear his name.

All of this is fine if you're not into the deep rooted issues such as our failing economy, lack of decent healthcare, and global warming. I need for him to elaborate on those issues and until he do I think I'll be voting for Clinton.

We had better take heed in this..

I am pretty amazed at the amount of comments but I probably shouldn't be. In response to everyone, I quite like Obama, but I can't vote being a foreigner, so I have no bias. I do think that like all polititcians he is evasive and never directly answers the questions asked. What I find most interesting however is the fact that he is a man of color and I see little talk of this. This is an opinon: Given America's record, to me it seems unlikely that he will be the next president. We haven't even had a female yet! That said I don't like Hillary Clinton and what she stands for - and If I had to choose between Obama and her it would be a no brainer! In Britain we voted in Margaret Thatcher to get a woman into power and look where that got us: War War and more War. My opinion is just that - an opinion.

I agree with most of the commenters that mention the fact that Obama gives vague answers with no clear-cut details. HOW is he planning on solving specific problems?

Sooner: - Perhaps if we could get the high cost of malpractice insurance, caused by the legal profession's ownership of the courts, off the medical professions backs we could do something about the cost of health care. Posted an article on that on AC. The last line of this essay says exactly what socialists preach. "Ordinary people are incapable of taking care of themselves so we must tax you to death and send the money to Washington DC to take care of them." Bullshit. Ordinary people would be one Hell of a lot better at taking care of themselves if the bureaucrats in DC weren't taking so much out of their paychecks.

Lyl, All Democrats think that way, they think we should punish those who succeed by paying much more taxes just so they can give all away (socialized medicine and welfare programs). The best way is to fix our current healthcare system and make it actually more affordable. The insurance industry doesn't need to become larger to fix the problem, if the actaul cost of the healthcare in this country was reigned in we would have more employers providing health insurance for their workers and therefore more people would have insurance.

Obama's ideas frighten me. He'll never get into office, but if he did he would severely hurt the middle classes. He seems to believe that people who make $93,000 are rich (?!?) and should therefore pay higher taxes.

Great questions. Thanks for sharing.

I would rather listen to candidates speeches on You Tube. Obama, for instance, has very sepcific ideas on how to solve a lot of issues with one solution. Whereas, Rudy, like Clinton tells me they want to be dictators (in their own language). Ron Paul will speak about he has never even smoked a joint, and that the "War on Drugs" is not working, so he will stop it, but ofers no plan on how he intends to do that or any mention of 3 year olds dying by gang violence.I especially liked the You Tube/CNN debates with citizen generated questions. I for one have never noticed candidates jewelry or lack of it and could care less. I am sure Obama would have rather said "No Comment" to the immigrant question, rather than risk the ire of the ACLU.

Good job Isabel. I met Obama in July. Boy are we lucky to be in Iowa?

It must be cool being in Iowa (or N.H.) and being exposed to candidates at such an accessible level...good job!

Very interesting. My vote is still undecided. Your article was informative, though. Good reporting.
