Many experts will tell you that setting goals is an extremely important part of life. From the business world to the home setting, setting goals helps us realize not only where we want to go but to also understand when we arrive. Setting goals is a great way to keep on task, motivate yourself and others, and to realize when we get off track.

Setting a goal in and of itself indicates that something needs to be done. Whether it is a want or a need, something has been recognized as needing to be addressed. This is the reason goals are divided into short term and long term. This is also the reason why goals should be reviewed periodically. As things are achieved, they can be crossed off the list. As new things arise, they can be added. Take for example a long term goal of taking a trip. There will probably be several short term goals which will need to be accomplished such as saving, getting a desired reservation at an exclusive resort, and other tasks. There might even be a goal of losing weight before the trip. By setting goals, it is then possible to recheck where you are, what has been achieved, and what still needs to be addressed before the long term goal can become reality.

Goals also keep us on track. Many times having a goal will inspire and assist and individual to continue until done. And you are finished when the goal is reached. Goals provide the opportunity to place attainable limits on the things we need to accomplish. For example, many people have the goal to lose weight. By structuring the goals in a realistic manner, the over all goal can be achieved. When trying to lose weight, putting goals in place for certain periods of time can not only break down the overall goal of weight loss, but reduce it to more manageable periods of time and amounts of weight.

Goals are a management tool. This tool helps to prevent us from becoming over whelmed. As our lives continue to gather speed and every moment is almost spoken for, setting goals becomes a tool by which we determine what is important, what we need to do and when it needs to be done. Goals help to sort through the demands of life and help to keep us on track so that we accomplish what is needed.
