So who really is Samantha? I'm not sure, but after tuning into the first episode of the new ABC sitcom, "Samantha Who?" I'll be lying if I said I didn't want to find out.Played by the talented, and not to mention adorable, Christina Applegate, Samantha Newly is a confused amnesiac, who awakes in a hospital 80 days after being hit in a hit-and-run accident. She forgets that she is a self-centered, mean, and lying cheater, who has not spoken to her own parents in two years. Applegate approaches the role with a wide-eyed innocence and comes across as believably needy and funny at the same time. She forces the viewer to wonder, what if I could do things differently. Change things I don't like about myself? Fix the things I did wrong, and the people I hurt? Most importantly, what if I looked at myself from the outside, and didn't like myself?
Such questions are the reasons why "Samantha Who?" is unique and should be successful.
All of the characters surrounding Samantha are sympathetic, but seem almost as confused as Samantha herself. Jean Smart plays Regina, Samantha's mom. She is a loving mother but is kind of goofy. She was videotaping Samantha while in her comma, in an effort to win a house make-over. Regina does not seem to fully understand her daughter's condition. When Samantha could not remember one of her relatives, her mother spoke louder, as if that would help with her memory. Samantha's father Howard, played by Kevin Dunn, is just as goofy, always reminding his wife of their daughter's condition, but still acting as though his daughter should remember the things and people that he speaks about. By looking at the relationship she has with her parents, more questions come into play for Samantha; What kind of person does not speak to their parents? What did I do for my own parents not to speak to me for two years? Can I fix whatever it was that I did wrong to them?
These are very serious questions. Yet the show remained funny and entertaining for the entire half hour.
