While gas prices remain outrageous, more and more people are putting aside their aspirations of owning a big truck or SUV for the fuel efficient vehicles. However, the more you look to save at the gas station, the less car you will have. Most of the fuel efficient cars are compact, with a few sedans that make the list. Some hybrids can be expensive and not everyone sells ethanol yet. So here's a list of a few fuel efficient cars to consider.

Volkswagen Golf
On the open road, this little baby can go 46 miles per gallon and an amazing 38 miles in a congested downtown area. The only knock on this car is the price, averaging about $19,000. That's seems a little expensive based on the size of this car. However, I'm sure that many people may think dishing out $19,000 is worth it if they can save money at the gas station.

Toyota Yaris
The Yaris is definitely small, cheap, and very fuel efficient. With a 126 horsepower engine, this little car can go 40 miles on the highway before losing a gallon of gas. $12,000 is my kind of price so the Yaris gets my stamp of approval, if that means anything.

Toyota Corolla
At one point in my 10-year driving career, I owned a Corolla. It was always a pleasure to avoid the pump because of the terrific gas mileage I got out of it. The 2007 Corolla is even better, with 4l mpg on the highway and 32 mpg in the city. Also, Toyota's are one of the most reliable and durable cars in the world so you shouldn't have to worry about your mileage decreasing as the car ages.

Honda Civic
Toyota's have always been my favorite car, but I like Honda's as well. The 2007 Civic is one of the reasons why I like this brand so much. For about $15,000 - $16,000, you can get this car that goes 40 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in the city.

Ford Focus
It's a surprise that an American made car can be just as fuel efficient as some of the top foreign cars. The focus, although small and rather ugly, will definitely save you some money at the pump. This car averages about 36 mpg on the highway and 27 in the city.
