When you think you might be pregnant, whether expected, planned or unexpected, and you want to know the results as early as possible, it is important that a home pregnancy test be accurate. Additionally, when you are nervous or excited about the test results, it's also important that the home pregnancy test be easy to use and read.

So when you find yourself in need of a home pregnancy test, which one should you choose? Searching the Internet product reviews for pregnancy tests, three home pregnancy test kits are clearly consistently rated above the others. Let's take a look at them now.

First Response Early Result Home Pregnancy Test

First Response Early Result clinical testing, according to the product insert information, indicates it may detect pregnancy as soon as four days prior to a missed period. Clinical testing indicates a 95% accuracy rate in detecting the pregnancy hormone on the first day of a missed period and only increases in accuracy each day after the missed period. In consumer testing, it has ranked highest on user ratings on the majority of product review websites, and has consistently scored favorable reviews or ratings on retail websites where ratings/reviews are allowed.

This home pregnancy test comes with a test stick with an absorbent tip, which you can use to dip in urine or urinate directly on the tip, preferably first thing in the morning, and then wait three minutes. After the three minute wait, the results window will display two pink lines if pregnant, and one pink line if not pregnant.

First Response Early Result is one of the few home pregnancy test kits available in one, two or three test packages. The recommended testing is to purchase a two test kit, test once when you think you might be pregnant, and then test again one week later to confirm the results. First Response Early Result home pregnancy test kits allow you the flexibility to do this. With an average retail price of about $15 for the two pregnancy test kit, First Response Early Result is a bit more expensive than generic brands, but shows to be a good value for home pregnancy tests.

The last one I used was Equate brand and it was positive. That was about 5 years ago :)

Great information! I have used the first response tests and the equate brand (Walmart generic) and honestly did not see much of a difference other than the fact that the equate ones were cheaper. I got a positive result before my missed period with the generic brand too.

"The most sophisticated piece of technology you will ever pee on." Makes me glad I'm a man.

just don't use someones iPod shuffle and you'll get good accuracy, eh? Interesting article!

This was an excellent comparison review. The last time I used one of these was Thanksgiving Day, 1995. And we had something to be thankful to God for that Thanksgiving. I don't remember what test I used but it had dye marks to indicate pregnancy.

If you are late by like a week, the $1 Pg tests are fine to buy. But, most of us take one when we are trying to get pregnant, so we can't wait that long so we want an early test. The Early Pg tests just are more sensitive. By the time you are a week past due, that hcg hormone has doubled a few times and will get picked up on a cheaper test.

Glad I haven't got to worry about this any more ;)

I'm so glad I don't have to worry about taking these tests anymore! I guess I can add that to the list of good things about having a hysterectomy! Great review though! ~Tamee

A friend of mine works at a drugstore that sells $.99 pregnancy tests and she said they actually work! Surprise, surprise! And the "yes" or "no" makes me laugh too. Well done review!

Great review, Michy. I like the First Responses because they're a good price and you get two in a box. Not that this has anything to do with your article, but I LOVE the commercial for a pregnancy test (I think it's Clear Blue Easy) with the guy that says, "Without a doubt, the most innovative piece of technology you will ever pee on." It cracks me up every time. :-P

Have to laugh at the "yes" or "no" innovation. Do people really believe they are getting anything different with this product?

I took three first response pregnancy test with my first child and one showed up positive, the second negative, and third was a dud. Go figure, I guess it couldn't make up it's mind. Great review though. Sometimes you can get a batch of products that came from the same line that are not working properly and this is why it is important to show at different locations when you have to purchase more than one item like this.
