In 1998 the Minnesota Vikings set the NFL record for most points scored in a season. Randall Cunningham, Cris Carter and Randy Moss led the offense of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings scored 556 points in 1998 on their way to a 15 - 1 record. Scoring 556 points in the regular season means the Minnesota Vikings averaged 34 points per game. After their first six games the Minnesota Vikings had scored 207 points.

This year the talk of the NFL is the New England Patriots. The New England Patriots won their first five games with ease and many thought they would get their first challenge against the Dallas Cowboys. When the New England Patriots dispatched of the Dallas Cowboys 48 - 27 the question is no longer how good are the New England Patriots compared to the rest of the NFL. The question is now how good are the New England Patriots compared to the rest of history.

The New England Patriots, led by Tom Brady, are scoring points at an incredible rate. After six games the New England Patriots have scored 230 points, which puts them 23 points ahead of where the Minnesota Vikings were at in their record breaking season.

Can the New England Patriots and Tom Brady actually break the record the Minnesota Vikings set?

There is obviously one thing the New England Patriots and the 1998 Minnesota Vikings have in common: Randy Moss.

Randy Moss burst onto the scene in 1998. In just his rookie season Randy Moss caught 69 passes for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns. Seventeen touchdowns still stands as a high in touchdowns for Randy Moss.

That was back when Randy Moss was a superstar and possibly headed towards being one of the greatest receivers of all time. The past few years Randy Moss has had some problems and his numbers dropped to 42 receptions, 553 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. When the New England Patriots acquired Randy Moss many figured

Takeaways
  • Tom Brady and Randy Moss are on pace to have better stats than Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss.
  • The rest of the offensive weapons for the Patriots aren't as good as the Vikings.
  • The New England Patriots will break the points scored record because of the mediocrity of the NFL.
