Many young children are now obese and very overweight, this not only increases their risk of juvenile dietetics, but also teaches them bad habits that they will carry for the rest of their lives. Most of the overweight children do have at least one parent that is overweight that lives in the family. You can help you child lose weight and become healthier being an overweight child growing up it was very upsetting. I was picked on about my weight, and couldn't wear the stylish clothes, only fitting into the husky sizes. Young children can call the over weight child many nicknames, and the child doesn't feel like they are fitting in with the others. Encouraging them to become active and eat better may take some work on your part but you can help them make the changes.

The first thing that you will want to do is talk with the family doctor or the pediatrician about a plan that you can work with for the child with the eating habits. The doctor can give you recommended calories for the child, and give you many great tips on how to reduce the excess calories during the day. He or she will also probably give the child a physical so that you can work out a plan for the child to exercise and get physically fit again. The physician may also recommend that you speak with a nutritionist to give you more and better options.

Once you have a plan from the doctor, you can start to make better choices while shopping for groceries, buying the lower calorie food, and choosing foods from the healthier food groups. If you don't keep high calorie foods in the house there will be less temptation for the child who is trying to lose weight. Keeping fresh fruit will encourage the children to start eating fruit. Fast foods are never good for a diet especially for children who are trying to lose weight, so while your child is trying to lose weight you may want to cook your meals instead of stopping at the fast food restaurant nightly.

Scary because my daughter likes to eat. I feel bad telling her no but she is gaining so fast. Good article!

You are right, coming down on kids will not help them lose weight. It will however, make them feel bad about themselves, which is not the preferred goal that many parents (or any parent) should have. The most important thing is that the child is healthy. If a child is overweight and it will have negative affects on his or her health, then it is time to make children more active by participating in fun excercises that will help in weight loss. Great article.

Doing activities along with your kids is essential! I grew up as an overweight child and I am determined not to have this happen for my children since I am not an overweight adult. Thanks for the tips.
