Childhood obesity is becoming a huge issue in America. As the holidays approach many parents groan at the thought of their children dragging pillow cases full of candy into their home. The amount of sugar and corn syrup the average child will consume over the next month is staggering. Did you know that one mini Halloween treat is about the same as consuming two packets of sugar? As alternatives to candy, parents are thinking up creative "treats" to give away that won't make children groan.

Here are ten ideas that will please even your worst critics.

Temporary Tattoos

Temporary Tattoos make kids feel grown up and cool. Opt for a selection and let the children pick their own. If you want to get creative model them by putting them on your arm or face.

Glow Toys

Glow Sticks are a neat option because the children can use them right away. By purchasing glow necklaces or bracelets children can strap these on and be spotted more easily by traffic and other trick or treaters.

Parachute Men

There is something intriguing about these little guys that even I like. Most Dollar Stores have packs of 4 or 5 parachute men for a buck. You throw them up in the air, the parachute unravels and kids can chase them around. Not only do they have a nifty gift not loaded with sugar, but also you will promote outdoor play.

Snappers

Ok, so this "treat" may take a little foresight, but during the summer when Fourth of July knick knacks go on sale, stock up on these little snappers. As long as kids treat them with respect and launch them at the ground not other children, they are fun for kids of all ages. I still get a kick out of them.

Slime

Kids seem to love ooey gooey stuff, so why not give them a slimy "treat" that fits into the Halloween theme. A bottle of goo will make kids giggle.

Silly Putty

Growing up, I'd spend hours sticking silly putty to newspapers and pulling off print. I'd take time to mold them to form bubbles and make them pop. They are also a good stress relief. I keep some in my car to relieve my own stress in the car, but my nephews always dig it out for entertainment.

Very creative ideas. My husband and I "hide" on Halloween. We go out to dinner and a movie and hope that the masses have moved on by the time we get home! Great article. :)
