The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued voluntary recalls for several products that contain excessive levels of lead that violate the federal government standards for lead paint levels. These products have been imported from China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The National Institutes of Health warn that even small amounts of lead exposure may hurt a child's mental development. As the level of lead in the blood gets higher, it can also cause reduced IQ, kidney damage, slowed growth, hearing problems, behavior problems, attention problems, and aggressive behavior. The following products are some of those recalled for lead levels that exceed the federal government standard, and should be immediately removed from the child's environment:

Cub Scouts Totem Badges

Kahoot Products is recalling 1.6 million Cub Scout Totem Badges badges because the surface paints on the badge exceed government standards for lead levels. The badges were sold from January 2000 through September 2007 in Boy Scouts of America retail outlets. The words "PROGRESS FOR RANKS" are printed on the badge. These badges were made in China. Consumers should contact Kahoot Products, Inc. to arrange for a replacement badge.

Winnie-the-Pooh Deluxe 23-Piece Play Set

49,000 sets distributed exclusively by J. C. Penney through their stores, catalog, and website from August 2005 through August 2007 are being recalled. The CPSC advises parents to take these items away from children immediately. The cost was $40 and consumers should return the items to any J. C. Penney store for a full refund. These products were made in China.

Really good information. With all the recalls that have been going on, everyone in my family has put a ban on any kind of toys for birthday or Christmas presents for the kids - we're going to go the good ol' fashioned home made route instead. At least then we'll know what our kids have their hands (and mouths) on.

Thanks for the report, but I am just about scared to buy anything anymore. Has this been happening all along, or is this new lax standards on imports. What is the deal?

Aly I had to come back and let you know that I passed on the link to this article to some parents who I told about this. They wanted more info. I urged them to leave a comment so I hope they do. I'm glad you put the info out there!

good report. if we manufactured the stuff here we could regulate it better. How many more dangerous lead recalls will it take?
