If you believe that you are falling in debt more and more each month, do not ignore it. The best thing you can do is recognize that you are in trouble financially and create a plan. If you are having a hard time paying all your bills, a few simple changes may be able to correct the problem. If you have the will, bankruptcy or even credit counseling may not be necessary.
Get organized by creating a budget-
Many of us that get in trouble with debt are not keeping track of spending vs. earnings, not saving money and compensating for lack of funds by using credit cards. Having a budget will not prevent financial hardship, but it will prepare you to deal with it more effectively.
How much money are you bringing in each month?
Write down all sources of income.
How much money are you spending each month?
Write down all of your expenses. This includes rent/mortgage bill, utility bill, association fees, credit card bills, phone bill, food expenditure, medical bills, gas bill, cable bill, insurance, entertainment, etc.
What are your fixed expenses?
Fixed expenses are the things you must pay. Such as your rent/mortgage, electricity, food, credit card bills, etc.
What can you do without?
If you are having a hard time paying your bills, you will probably find that your spending is exceeding your earning. When you look at the list of what you are spending money on, ask yourself if there is something you can live without. As an example, you may choose to get rid of your cable and stop eating out. If this is enough to solve the money problem, congratulations! If not, keep reading...
Stay within your budget.
In your budget you may also want to consider saving money each month. Then when an unexpected expense occurs, you will have a nest egg to fall back on.
Stop using your credit cards-
If you are in serious debt, the best thing to do would be to put the cards away immediately. I realize that is easier said than done. If you can, then do. If you cannot, commit to putting them away one month from today. If you are following your budget, you will begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
