In this guide I will show you how to get started with Gimp. I will show you things like, creating a new document, saving a document, exporting a document, opening a photo, cropping a photo, and more. If you are new to using Gimp, then this guide is for you. Open Gimp and we will get started.

Creating a New Document in Gimp

When your Gimp program loads, you will only see a toolbar. You will have to go to the top of that toolbar and click File > New to create a new document. When you click File > New, a box will pop up and ask you what size document do you want. Type in a size and click OK to create a new document. That is how you create a new document in Gimp.

How to Save a Document in Gimp

Go to the top of your window and click File > Save As. When the window opens, locate where you want the file to be saved, type in a name for your file, select the gimp extension, and click the Save button.

How to Export a File in Gimp

To export a file, you will first need to flatten your layers. So right click on your layers and click Flatten Image. Then go to the top of your window and click File > Save As. When the window opens, click the select file type button. The window will drop down and you will see the file types available. Click the file type that you want and click Save. The next window that pops up will be your quality window. Set the quality to what you want and click the OK button.

Opening a New Document in Gimp

To open a document, go to the top of your window and click File > Open. Locate the file that you want to open and click the Open button. You can also open stuff as a new layer. To do this go to the top of your window and click File > Open as New Layer. Locate the file that you want to open and click the Open button.

Opening a Photo in Gimp

Use the Open as New Layer tool to open a photo. Go to the top of your window and click File > Open as New Layer and locate the photo that you want to open. Click the photo and click the Open button.
