Texas Attorney General Honored for Fighting Internet Child Predators
The award was presented October 16th to Abbott during the McAfee Strategic Executive Security Summit in Dallas, Texas. Dave DeWalt, president and CEO of McAfee, Inc. was quoted in the press release as saying: "What is more important to us than the safety and well being of our children? Attorney General Abbott has been a national leader in the fight to protect our children online, and as a father of three children, I thank him for his courage and determination in going after online child predators."
The McAfee, Inc press release stated that Attorney General Abbott has been the Texas Attorney General since 2002, and established Texas' first Cyber Crimes Unit in 2003. In May of 2006, the United States Department of Justice gave the Cyber Crimes Unit initiated by Attorney General Abbot a grant so that the cyber unit could start one of the fifty Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces now existing across the nation. Abbott is also known for asking for his educational efforts and his attempts to get social networking sites to issue safeguards for children.
