My Gay Best Friend is Getting Married

About four years ago my best friend told me she was struggling with the thought that she might be a lesbian. I, of course, was as supportive as I could be; knowing that I had gone through a quiet battle in my mind about my sexuality at one point. I told her about my thoughts and what eventually led me to decide I was not a lesbian and told her that no matter what she decided she was my best friend and I would support her no matter what. She struggled with it for years and then came to me one day and told me she had had sex with a woman and liked it. From that point on, she knew she was a lesbian and wanted to live that lifestyle.

I was happy for her because she had struggled with it so long; she was brought up in an extremely Christian household and her family did not approve and most of her other friends felt the same way. They told her she was going to hell and all that other righteous religious bull. I told her to be happy in life because it is your significant other that will be with you always, friendships come and go. So she found someone that made her happy even when she made her mad. They have been dating for almost three years now and have decided they want to get "married". As I am sure most of you know, homosexual couples are not legally allowed to marry in the state of Michigan. They are, however, allowed to hold commitment ceremonies but this is in no way legally binding. The couple has decided to go to Canada (where gay marriage is legal) for a small ceremony just to have a license and then hold a ceremony here next summer.
