They are medication, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication with CBT. Agoraphobia is treatable and depending on your condition, one or all of these will be used.
Medication & CBT
If your agoraphobia is severe, your doctor may put you on medication to calm the panic attacks and anxiety. This allows you to feel better, get some relief and also a little confidence.
Up to this point, you may have had no hope at all. You may have thought it's impossible to get better. Seeing and feeling this improvement will now give you belief that perhaps it CAN be done.
CBT requires your active participation. You will be given 'homework' to do. This may be tasks that your doctor will ask you to do. Your doctor will also challenge your past thinking patterns.
Slowly, you will learn that your past thinking was inaccurate. You will be made to see that things you thought would happen never did. For example, you may have thought you were going to die. You didn't.
You'll be gradually exposed to anxiety-provoking situations. You may be required to keep a kind of diary, which you'll have to show to your doctor. In time, with this treatment combination, you will see progress.
Other Treatment Options
Not everybody likes taking medication. In fact, some people don't like going to see a doctor. If you fall under this category, there's plenty of hope for you as well.
